The ingredients needed to cook Vellayappam:
  1. Prepare 1 cup idli rice
  2. Use 1/4 cup poha
  3. Take 1 cup grated coconut
  4. Prepare 1 tbsp sugar
  5. Get 1 tsp yeast
  6. You need 1/2 tsp salt
Steps to make Vellayappam:
  1. In a large bowl take 1 cup idli rice and ¼ cup poha and soak for 4-5 hours
  2. In a blender add the soaked rice and poha,1 cup coconut and blend to smooth batter adding water as required.
  3. Now mix the batter with a tbsp sugar and 1 tsp dry yeast and make sure to mix everything well. Allow to ferment for 8 hours
  4. Once it is fermented well, add ½ tsp salt and mix well.
  5. Heat the Tawa/Dosa Pan and pour a ladleful of batter and spread out in a circular motion slightly thick than regular dosa.
  6. Cover and roast the dosa to a golden brown from the bottom and completely cooked from the top in presence of steam.
  7. Finally, enjoy vellayappam with chutney and veg stew.
